Interior Design Trends for 2024

Although I’m not a big fan of design trends as such, I’m seeing with the beginning of 2024 some new trends coming through that are driven by our lifestyles. These Interior Design trends for 2024 whilst have been brewing away in the background, some with the inception from Covid I felt worth the mention. It’s also an important part of the creative world and process to be aware of what direction trends are heading.

Hotel Inspired Luxury

The creation of indulgent sanctuaries, inspired by what we deem to be luxurious in our homes. Feature stone, gold wallpapers, quality linen bedding, wall sconces, art, indoor plants all can be used to create a more elevated experience in our homes.

Large Statement Art

Large statement art is really trending for 2024. Grand scale murals, abstract, vibrant. Statement art will add a lot of personality to a space.

Organic Textures

The continuation of nature inspired textures used to create natural and organic spaces. Textures such as knotted timbers, rough stone, hand woven textiles. The addition of organic textures to any interior design style such as Contemporary, Mid Century Modern or Scandinavian goes a long way to add warmth and approachability.

Curves and Edges

The bringing together of hard and soft. The current curves we have seen in the last few years but will have an edge or angular finish added to it.

Defined Zones

Moving away from open floor plans. Task driven spaces are now taking centre stage in how we design our home zones. The inception of this was covid. Seperate study’s are being used, instead of dining tables. Gyms are being set up in un-used spare bedrooms. Play rooms are separate to common family rooms. Home owners are tailoring their homes to suit their individual task needs, as opposed to combining tasks and expecting the one room to carry all their functions.

Original Spaces

Interior design has now strongly leaned into being very bespoke, custom, original. Gone are the days of cookie cutter design. Interior Designers will instead get to lean into their design skills to create one off designs for their clients that are very uniquely customised to suit that client and their loved ones.

Almond Beige / or Mushroom

We are seeing colour palettes lean more into warm brown based neutrals like this almond beige or mushroom. This is a timeless neutral that will tone in beautifully with whites, greys, browns and be an ideal colour way to add to kitchens and bathrooms as they won’t date.

Burnt Umber

Warm colour palettes are going to continue with the addition of colours like burnt umber. This colour has a lot of depth and warmth. It’s very nurturing and a beautiful accent colour. A striking pairing with subdued colours of forest green, navy, mustard and rich neutrals.

Euro Inspired Spaces

Celebrating the past, but in a contemporary way. Timeless elegance, European inspired design. Classic architecture and bespoke design are all making a return to the way we design our interior spaces.

Fluid Form Floor Rug

Irregular shaped Floor Rugs are an interesting addition to a home. The softness of the curve creates a statement and continues with the fluid forms we are seeing in home interior design this year.

Bespoke Decor

Earthen, handmade pottery is still trending in a big way for 2024. Along with other vintage inspired, bespoke decor pieces and light fixtures.

Cork Flooring

Cork flooring is back, it’s sustainable and stylish. It’s eco friendly, unique and has a lot of different designs that can be used to suit many design styles.

An underlying current as a whole for interior design that I’m seeing is sophisticated comfort. Curvy, natural, organic forms. Elevated finishes of marble, onyx, stone. Muted, deep tone colour palettes with a warm undertone. The embracing of elevated, luxurious living. These are all just trends, but none the less an interesting study of the way interior design is predicted to head in 2024.

Slow Living and Interior Design

MD Meanderings

Over the last few years I have really started to become more aware of my carbon footprint, and desired to implement a slow living lifestyle. As a result I have chosen to make more changes to my lifestyle, so that I can further reduce it.

One of the lifestyle approaches I’ve been attempting to adopt is Slow Living.

What is Slow Living

What is Slow Living? “Slow Living is a lifestyle which encourages a slower approach to aspects of everyday life, involving completing tasks at a leisurely pace. The origins of this lifestyle are linked to the Italian slow food movement, which emphasised traditional food production techniques in response to the emerging popularity of fast food during the 1980s and 1990s”. Trade Show Report 2017 featuring upcoming trends and colour schemes for interiors

MD Meanderings

On the weekend I attended the Iconic Trade Fair that was in Sydney, this trade show has a huge amount of Australia’s best suppliers that stock furniture, furnishings and decorator items for the home.

Today I thought I would reflect on what trends I noticed coming through as I scoured the stands and walked the many aisles of the Trade Fair.  This trade fair isn’t open to the general public

Vivid Sydney – Inspired Interior by My Decorator

Proposed foyer design for Performing Arts Co.

A few Friday nights ago we went into the city to take in the amazing atmosphere at Vivid Sydney 2013. We enjoyed dinner and drinks first at the Opera Bar and then wandered around Circular Quay and The Rocks to see all the different visual light displays.

I couldn’t help but let my designer mind go to thinking how some of the amazing images that were projected onto the Opera House could be used in Interior spaces. So to capture this creative thinking I have put together a 3D image for an Old Warehouse of a Performing Arts Company that shows what some Vivid could look like in a Commercial setting (pictured above). The proposed foyer would have a huge artwork image of the opera house (vivid a fied) hanging in the foyer with some quirky performing arts bowler hats as pendants and tan leather barcelona chairs to create a warm friendly welcome to any visitors.

I hope you had the opportunity to go and see Vivid Sydney 2013, if you didn’t have a look at the slideshow I put together of some of the photos we took. I would also love to read your thoughts and experiences of Vivid Sydney 2013 so feel free to comment below.
