Our dream home is built, but they didn’t furnish my interior!!

I visited Homeworld at Kellyville recently as I have had a number of my clients say they want the interiors of their newly built homes to have the same feel as the display homes at Homeworld.

The new homes that are being built around the Hills District of Norwest Sydney, in The Ponds, Stanhope Gardens, Kellyville, Rouse Hill,  Bella Vista, Glenhaven areas are an excellent example of quality cutting edge design and lifestyle friendly living.

I found a lot of the builders have tried to create a point of difference in their home designs which means a greater range of options are available to home buyers.  A few that I discovered were the addition of cloakrooms in the foyers of Sekisui Houses homes, these were a well thought out inclusion, as often people now like to store their shoes and jackets, sports equipment in a common area.  The family living area that incorporates outdoor entertaining really captures our Australian way of life and is now seen as standard in these new homes and also gives increase use of our Aussie backyard but the outworking of this vary with each home design.

What happens when you finish building your brand new home, move in and realise that your reality doesn’t match your ideal (that beautiful display home that first gave you the desire to build in the first place)? You think – – ‘Our dream home is built, but they didn’t furnish my interior!!’ I’m still sitting on the same lounge, dining at the same table, sleeping in the same bed and it all looks the same but just in a different location.  You feel frustrated because of the gap between your home and the display home.

Less is more, or is it?

Over the past month I have found myself saying to clients “It’s okay, you don’t need to fill every corner of the room – sometimes less is more”.  It’s like the fashion stylist advice I’ve read or heard about when you are getting ready and have your winning ‘outfit’ on, take one accessory off.  Sometimes I think it’s the same with interiors.  Have you ever walked into a room and there is so much stuff in the room that the beauty of the space is drowned out?  I’m a tad passionate about this subject, can you tell?

Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying go all out minimalist and banish that layered lounge room with it’s warm friendly welcome, I’m just saying let’s reassess and don’t be afraid to move a few items out of the room so that it can breath again.  Especially if there is a hero feature piece in the room, give it space to sing!

A key element to knowing if your room is too cluttered is to look at the interior style you are trying to achieve.  Modern, Contemporary, Classic, Industrial, Retro styles definitely lend themselves to the less is more approach.  Traditional, Country Cottage,  Rustic, Vintage etc… are more content with clutter.  When I say clutter I don’t mean mess, I mean having a decorative item in every corner, nook and cranny of your room.  They may be gorgeous pieces but this brings me to my next point.

The art of rotation.  Freshen it up.  Just like when you go to your favourite home interior store and the window display and store displays get changed on a regular basis do the same at home.  I have a storage nook where I put my decorator accessories, cushions, rugs, art and rotate them on a regular basis (okay sometimes not as regular as I would like) it gives my home a breath of fresh air when some old newbies come out of storage and get positioned in new vignettes.

Same goes for walls, leave some of them bare.  Groupings of art are far more impacting then scatterings.

I love going to homes where the interiors reflect the personalities of the owners, homes that are filled with furniture and items that have meaning to their owners.  Isn’t this quote from William Morris inspirational?  For me implementing what I am writing is a constant challenge.  Being an Interior Designer I often stumble upon so many ‘things’ that I just ‘need’ but I think if you decorate using the things you LOVE than you are on the right track to creating a home not a house.

5 easy ways to add warmth to an Industrial Interior

I have had a few people ask me for tips on how you can bring warmth to the current Industrial style that is trending at the moment.  Industrial in it’s pure form is quite cold and uninviting due to it’s materials being old industrial factory pipes, concrete floors, exposed brick walls, high ceilings, large spaces etc… but this fascinating style can definitely be warmed up so to speak so that it is more user friendly and more suited to today’s lifestyles.  Today I thought I would give you 5 easy ways you can add warmth to your Industrial Interiors.

1.  Lights – use warm lighting not cold. Simple change your light globe!

2. Colours – again, use a few splashes of reds, oranges, warm pinks in your furniture, rug, art and furnishing selections.

3. Finishes – introduce some wood, rugs, red brick.

4. Personal effects – some family photos maybe?

5. Flowers and Plants – select flowers that are modern and arrange them to suite the large scale of your space i.e. bird of paradise.
