What is Interior Design Style?

There are many different interior design styles. An interior design style is a look for your interior, where furniture, furnishings, and decor items are chosen for being in the same style family. This means the finished look of a room or home will be one particular style genre. Some examples of Interior Design Styles are Traditional; Classic; Boho; Industrial; Hamptons; Coastal; French Provincial; Contemporary; Modern and Art Deco.

Why should each home or room have an interior design style?

It gives a more cohesive look, rather than the room or home being scattered and piece-like in its style. A cohesive style makes it easier if you are wanting to create a statement room or statement in general. A room or home without style may feel like something is off, it also may feel boring and plain.

But shouldn’t a room just evolve?

Absolutely, yes it can evolve but it’s still important to have a style plan as you source and find pieces for your space. We are by no means taking any joy out of the creative process but rather simplifying it and helping to make decision-making easier. Please, be sure to colour outside of the lines with some of your pieces, but use good taste and skill as you do. A good designer creates amazing design by using contrast, friction, and variation as a tool, but it’s used sparingly.

The benefits of a cohesive style are that the room will be user-friendly, inviting, and fit for purpose. The room will also serve its owners well.

How can an Interior Designer help?

As an Interior Designer part of my role is to determine what your interior style will be for your home and implement this. The way I do this is by asking you directly to describe what you like from a style point of view. I also show my clients images of different interior styles to find out their preferences. This assists me to then base my design for them on these preferences. There are also times I can get a feel for style based on your home’s architecture. I can also gather style information by looking around and seeing your favourite pieces that you are wanting me to include in your design.

Taking the time to determine your interior style and use it in your home design and decorating is one of many design keys that will really elevate your home.
