It’s the season for gathering with our loved ones and celebrating Christmas. We thought we’d like to share with you how to decorate your home for Christmas especially when it comes to styling any horizontal surface in your home.
Your Christmas Decorating essentially is made up of how horizontal and vertical areas are decorated.
Horizontal Surface Decorating
Let’s chat about how to style any horizontal surface. What items to use, where to place them, what colour palette to use, how to coordinate the chosen items with the rest of the rooms decorating and more.

A horizontal surface could be a mantlepiece, coffee table, hall table, tv unit, side table, or buffet. These tips won’t really apply to dining table styling or tablescapes as these are more specialized.
- Visually divide the surface into thirds and choose to leave one-third of the surface untouched. You may opt for your styling to sit either symmetrical or asymmetrical based on your personal preferences.
- Gather the items you are considering using for this surface and have them nearby for easy access. Choose a variety of items that have varying heights, textures, shapes and sizing, colours to create a more interesting visual look and place them on your surface.
- Stagger the items on the surface so that the items aren’t sitting along the same plane.
- Tell stories. Use your decor pieces to tell a story. You may have a cute sculpture of a reindeer that you could position next to a photo of you and your family that is sitting in a bespoke photo frame that is in a similar colour palette to your reindeer.
- Don’t use anymore than 3-4 colours on the one surface, less is more when it comes to colour. You will create a more stylish result if you choose items that are all within the same colour palette.
- Add lighting by way of a table or floor lamp and some candles too, you can even scatter fairy lights along the surface which will add dimension and beautiful ambient lighting at night. Bonus points if you choose a Christmas-scented candle!
We hope you find these tips helpful as you decorate the interior spaces of your home for Christmas.
Wishing you and your loved ones a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
