Wow, doesn’t that headline sound like I’m going to give you fashion advice.  Well this is fashion advice for the home.

I know that the vintage theme has been trending for a while now but I actually had a client ask me the other day for some tips on how to achieve the look.  I had a squiz through my categories and was horrified to see that I hadn’t actually written a post about vintage styling, so here it is.

I think that today’s vintage interior covers the eclectic, eccentric, quirky, hand made, pre loved pieces with a nostalgic past and some whimsical fun.  It’s nearly a return to the simpler lifestyle of days gone by.  Think ‘playing lady’s’ as my mum used to refer to afternoon tea with her friends, drinking from fine bone china tea cups.  It also has a great dose of the 1920’s retro thrown in.

How can you achieve a Vintage Interior in your home?  Easy, whether you are starting with a blank canvas or mixing it in with an existing style here are 5 ways to add some Vintage to your look.

  1. Be you, if you love your collection of fine bone china now is the time to display it.  Or if you have a fabulous 1920’s retro chair – resurrect it.
  2. Don’t use the cliche union jack – everyone does this.  Be original.
  3. Find one vintage piece of furniture you love and feature it well.  Maybe it’s a retro sideboard, style it with some fantastic quirky decorator pieces or family collector heirlooms.
  4. Go shopping.  Op shops, Antique stores, Etsy.  The key is to find some original items that you love.  Or make your own handmade item with love.
  5. Vintage can be overwhelming so keep your floors and walls neutral, soft pastels at the most.

One last tip, don’t go all out vintage.  You don’t want your room to look as though it should belong in a museum.  And remember a good room is one that evolves, so keep adding bits and pieces over time – keeps those that enjoy the space on their toes.

Now go and make yourself a strawberry milkshake!
