Doors

Uncategorized
I have a fascination with doors.  I think it started when I visited a friends house and they had a print glued to their door of a little girl, with her back faced to me knocking on their door.  It was the beginning of my love for doors and for trompe l’oeil art.  Wikipedia definition of trompe l’oeil is that it is an art technique involving extremely realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects appear in three dimensions.

As a teenager I went to the UK on a family holiday and was captivated by a trompe l’oeil of a violin on a door.  Note, common thread is the door!  I then fell in love with homes with brightly coloured doors particularly red, yellow, blue and green.  I love the look of freshly painted doors and aged patina doors.  Of late I was reminded of my door fetish when I saw a door with painted words, a quote on it.  I’ve seen doors made into chalkboards for children.  Doors turned into art.
Then I was inspired once again this time in Europe, I think it was Paris or Rome (we covered a lot in a short period of time) where I found a painting of Jesus Christ standing at a door without a handle.  This piece of Art was illustrating Revelations 3:20 from the bible that says “Behold, I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with me”.  I love that Jesus doesn’t barge into our lives and hearts, he’s there waiting for us to invite Him in.
The front door to a home, store or community building is the first impression that you get about the people inside.  I know whenever I see a coloured door on a building, especially someone’s home I get excited.  I love that some people go to the effort to paint their door, it brightens my day!
