Style Crush – Iris Apfel

Colour, Fashion, Inspiration, Style Crush, Textiles

This style crush is all about Iris Apfel.

Iris was born on the 29th August 1921 which makes her 97.  I was drawn to Iris when I watched the documentary they did about her that is currently screening on Netflix. As I viewed the documentary I fell more in love with her larger than life approach to fashion, colour, design and fabric and how she places very few limitations on herself and her design aesthetic.

Iris and her husband Carl launched a textile company which they ran for 42 years, called Old World Weavers.  They were a well-travelled couple, exploring the world and where she used her eye for design and fashion to source out and purchase fabrics and non-western, artisanal clothing.

In 2005 an Exhibit was created around Iris, her clothing and accessories, this was the first exhibit focused on a living person who wasn’t a designer.

Iris consults and lectures on style and fashion at the University of Texas in Austin.  In 2013 she was listed as one of the 50 “Best Dressed over 50” by the Guardian.

Last year she wrote a book called, Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon.  This year she has signed a modeling contract with IMG a global agency.  I love how age has by no means limited Iris’ vision and approach to life, she’s inspiring isn’t she?

Have you seen the Netflix documentary about Iris? It’s well worth watching, she’s such an interesting person, she has amazing taste and style. She’s always curious (even in her 90s) and has a great sense of humor. I like how she has a design program, teaching young designers history of design and how to appreciate quality, artisan techniques so they are passed along to the next generation so that these crafting skills aren’t lost.

She once had someone say to her ”You’re not pretty, you’ve got something better, you’ve got style”.

What can we learn from Iris?  I think it’s to remove our limitations that we place on what does and doesn’t work.  I think we should broaden our horizons, try different combinations of colour, print, style, play and see what could be.  I also think she teaches us not to be limited by our age or any physical limitations we may have, but just to live each day and live it to it’s fullest and in the best way we know how.

Check out Iris on Netflix, unfortunately, it is only airing until 13th April 2019 so be sure to get in and learn about this fabulous fashion and design icon.
